Esther Deans MBE

Commissioner

Growing up in London from a Jamaican background, I developed an early interest in social justice, equalities and helping others. Deciding to be a teacher at 4 years old, I was the first in my family to go to University. I worked in Bristol as a Head of Faculty, trained teachers for Bristol University and UWE (ITT programme), supported Bristol schools with Equalities Programmes & the Hate Crime Ambassador programme training young people to support each other. I now work full time Leading KS4 Humanities at Malmesbury school in Wiltshire. After a serious racist attack in Bristol I joined SARI in 1995 and went on to become the Chair of SARI (Stand Against Racism & Inequalities), building a grassroots charity visited by Prince Charles and achieving local & national awards. After outstanding KS4 results I was head hunted to become the Chair of SACRE (Standing Advisory Council on Religious Education), and later identified to be one of 13 Commissioners across England for CORE (Commission on Religious Education) working with the Dean of Westminster on a high profile report for the Government. I am part of the Race Equality in Education Steering Group to ensure better provision and outcomes for pupils and also part of the Journey to Justice Steering Group to encourage and empower others. I have achieved local and national awards for my work, including an MBE in 2008, and in 2015 Unsung Hero MTM award. I am dedicated to making change for a better future.
